Abstract:

In contemporary India, motherhood continues to occupy a culturally revered space, yet reproductive autonomy remains contested—especially for single women. While increasing numbers of women choose single parenting through divorce, separation, widowhood, or independent decision-making, societal acceptance has not evolved at the same pace. This article examines the complexities faced by single mothers who wish to have a second child but encounter cultural, legal, financial, and emotional constraints. Drawing from sociological frameworks and feminist perspectives, the study highlights how single motherhood challenges patriarchal norms and redefines family structures in India. The article argues that motherhood must be understood as an autonomous choice rather than a socially regulated responsibility.
