Abstract:

Health outcomes are central to human development and long-term economic growth. In India, however, the health system has historically lagged behind global standards, particularly in maternal and child health, life expectancy, and quality of care. Even before the COVID-19 crisis, the country was struggling with insufficient health expenditure, inadequate infrastructure, and uneven healthcare access across states. The COVID-19 pandemic further exposed systemic weaknesses, highlighting how underinvestment in health undermines both social welfare and economic resilience. This paper examines the interrelationship between health outcomes and economic growth in India, with particular emphasis on the challenges of public health spending, governance, universalization of services, and preparedness for unforeseen crises such as pandemics. It also analyzes how poor health outcomes translate into health-driven poverty, lower productivity, and slower economic growth, thereby necessitating urgent reforms. By drawing attention to the gaps in India’s health sector, the study argues for comprehensive policy measures that strengthen public health infrastructure, expand equitable access, and align health spending with long-term developmental goals.
