Abstract:
This study explores the antimicrobial potential of two mangrove species, Avicennia marina and Excoecaria agallocha, collected from Mumbai's coastal regions. Leaf extracts were prepared using cold maceration with methanol and ethyl acetate. Phytochemical screening revealed compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, and alkaloids. Antibacterial activity was tested against Xanthomonas campestris and Staphylococcus xylosus using the agar well diffusion method. Methanolic extracts, particularly of A. marina, showed significant inhibition zones, suggesting strong antibacterial activity. These findings highlight the potential of mangrove plants as eco-friendly antimicrobial agents for sustainable crop protection.
