Abstract:

The actual functioning of the Church of Christ-Mission Harris, known as the Harris Church, is based on its internal structure. In this organization specific to the Church, “the guards” play a preponderant role in maintaining order and discipline. Our goal is to show that all religious practice requires order and discipline. Thus, the achievement of its objectives requires a rigorous and cross-analysis of oral sources and various information from general and specialized works on Harrisme in Côte d'Ivoire.

This is why in the Harris Church a specific body is dedicated to the establishment of order and discipline, these are the key words of the Christian communities of Harris. By doing so, they wanted to follow in the footsteps of William Wadé Harris, whom they readily call their founder (René Bureau, 1971: 67). They claim him as both their initiator of biblical revelation and the organizer of their own Church. Because, during his preaching, the prophet places the men on one side and the women on the other side and gives his message in strict respect for order and discipline. It is this function, which is devolved to the guards in the Harrist Church. On the strength of this, they maintain close relations with the other constituted bodies of the Church.
