Abstract:
Surface mining operations rely heavily on haul trucks for overburden and mineral transportation, making them one of the largest contributors to energy consumption, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and operating costs (International Council on Mining and Metals [ICMM], 2023; International Energy Agency [IEA], 2024). With increasing emphasis on sustainable mining and carbon neutrality, battery-electric mining trucks have emerged as a promising alternative to conventional diesel-powered haul trucks (McKinsey & Company, 2024; Deloitte, 2024). This study presents a comparative environmental and economic evaluation of diesel and electric mining trucks operating under similar production conditions in surface mines. The assessment includes diesel fuel consumption, electricity consumption, carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, operating expenditure (OPEX), maintenance costs, life-cycle costs, and economic feasibility indicators such as Net Present Value (NPV) and payback period. Results indicate that electric trucks significantly reduce direct greenhouse gas emissions and operating costs despite requiring higher initial capital investment. Based on a representative mine operating 6,000 hours annually, electric trucks reduce annual carbon emissions by approximately 68–75% and operating costs by nearly 35–45% compared to diesel trucks. Economic analysis demonstrates that the higher purchase cost can be recovered within approximately 5–7 years, depending on electricity prices and battery replacement costs. The findings highlight that electrification of haulage systems represents an effective strategy for improving mine (Kumari, V. (2023). sustainability while reducing long-term operating expenses, consistent with recent trends in mining decarbonization and fleet electrification (ICMM, 2023; IEA, 2024; McKinsey & Company, 2024).
