Abstract:
The classical theories of social stratification usually follow the assumption of a direct relation between the objective and the subjective social position of the individual. This paper is an empirical investigation of such a relationship in the context of the socio-economic dynamism of present-day Haryana. The research uses primary data from 250 respondents to create a multidimensional Social Class Index (SCI) and a composite Value Orientation Index (VOI) for studying the influence of material conditions on normative beliefs. The results show what is known as "ideological diffusion. Objective class position is significantly related to the overall value composite, and directly and indirectly to those values that are directly associated with economic security; but most of the individual values such as justice, tradition, and individual freedom are not class-dependent. The study shows that although material inequalities are highly polarised, the subjective class character is more fluid and that there is a tendency to abstract the objective social class from the subjective.
