Abstract:
Environmental pollution has emerged as one of the most serious global challenges of the twenty-first century, significantly threatening aquatic ecosystems and the organisms that depend on them for survival. Aquatic environments such as rivers, lakes, wetlands, and oceans are continuously exposed to various pollutants originating from human activities, including industrial discharge, agricultural runoff, domestic sewage, plastic waste, and chemical contaminants. These pollutants introduce toxic substances into water bodies, altering the natural physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of aquatic ecosystems and causing severe consequences for aquatic life.
The increasing release of heavy metals, pesticides, fertilizers, petroleum products, and microplastics into water systems has disrupted the ecological balance of aquatic habitats. Such pollutants often accumulate in sediments and organisms, leading to bioaccumulation and biomagnification in the food chain. Aquatic organisms including fish, plankton, molluscs, crustaceans, amphibians, and aquatic plants are particularly vulnerable to these contaminants. Exposure to polluted water can cause physiological stress, reproductive failure, developmental abnormalities, reduced growth rates, and increased mortality among aquatic species. In many cases, toxic chemicals damage vital organs, disrupt endocrine systems, and impair metabolic functions, ultimately threatening the survival of species. Furthermore, nutrient pollution caused by excessive fertilizers and organic waste leads to eutrophication, which results in the rapid growth of algae and aquatic plants. This process depletes dissolved oxygen levels in water bodies, creating hypoxic or “dead zones” where most aquatic organisms cannot survive. Similarly, plastic pollution has become a growing concern as plastic debris and microplastics are ingested by marine and freshwater organisms, causing internal injuries, blockage of digestive systems, and toxic chemical exposure.In addition to biological impacts, environmental pollution also affects biodiversity, ecosystem stability, and the availability of aquatic resources for human consumption. The decline in fish populations and the degradation of aquatic habitats directly influence fisheries, livelihoods, food security, and economic activities in many parts of the world. Therefore, addressing aquatic pollution is essential not only for ecological sustainability but also for the well-being of human societies.
This article aims to examine the major sources and types of environmental pollution affecting aquatic ecosystems and to analyze their impacts on aquatic life. It also highlights the importance of effective environmental management, pollution control strategies, sustainable industrial practices, and public awareness to protect aquatic biodiversity. By understanding the relationship between environmental pollution and aquatic life, policymakers, researchers, and communities can work together to implement conservation measures and ensure the long-term health and sustainability of aquatic ecosystems.
