Abstract:

In Ayurveda, the concept of Srotas represents the channels responsible for transportation, transformation, and circulation within the body. Among these, Annavaha Srotas plays a major role in the intake, digestion, absorption, and transportation of food materials. Ancient Ayurvedic texts such as Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita have elaborately described the anatomical and physiological significance of Annavaha Srotas along with its pathological manifestations. The present literary review aims to analyze the concept of Annavaha Srotas with correlation to modern gastrointestinal physiology. Classical references indicate that the Amashaya and Annavahi Dhamanis are considered the Mula (root) of Annavaha Srotas. Its primary function is the digestion, absorption, and nourishment of the body through Anna Rasa. Modern physiology explains these processes through gastrointestinal motility, enzymatic digestion, diffusion, osmosis, and absorption mechanisms occurring in the alimentary canal. The study concludes that Annavaha Srotas represents a complex network of gastrointestinal structures involved in digestion and nutrient transportation, thereby maintaining bodily nourishment and homeostasis.
