Abstract:

The Doctrine of Signatures is an ancient philosophical concept proposing that the external appearance, colour, shape, habitat, or other natural characteristics of plants, minerals, and animals indicate their potential therapeutic uses. Although the doctrine predates homoeopathy by several centuries, it has influenced the selection and understanding of medicinal substances in many traditional systems of medicine. In homoeopathy, remedies are selected according to the Law of Similars and are primarily based on drug proving, toxicological data, and clinical verification rather than the Doctrine of Signatures. Nevertheless, the doctrine has often served as a supplementary tool for understanding the nature and sphere of action of certain remedies in the Homoeopathic Materia Medica. This review explores the historical evolution, philosophical basis, application in homoeopathic materia medica, examples of important remedies, scientific perspectives, limitations, and contemporary relevance of the Doctrine of Signatures.
