Abstract:

The Bildungsroman, traditionally defined as a novel of formation or coming-of-age, has undergone significant transformation in its adaptation to non-Western contexts. In Indian English literature, the female Bildungsroman emerges as a distinctive subgenre that interrogates patriarchal structures while negotiating the complex intersections of tradition, modernity, colonialism, and postcolonial nationhood. This paper traces the evolution of the female Bildungsroman from its nineteenth-century origins in the works of Krupabai Satthianadhan to its contemporary manifestations in the writings of Anita Desai, Shashi Deshpande, Nayantara Sahgal, and others. Unlike its European counterpart, which typically charts an individual's integration into society, the Indian female Bildungsroman often depicts a trajectory of resistance, fragmentation, and ambivalent resolution, reflecting the protagonist's struggle against patriarchal and colonial constraints. Through close analysis of key texts, this paper argues that the genre serves as a crucial site for negotiating female subjectivity in India, illuminating how women writers have employed the form to critique social norms, explore psychological interiority, and articulate alternative visions of female identity. The paper further examines how postcolonial and feminist theoretical frameworks have enriched our understanding of the genre, revealing its capacity to register the specific challenges faced by Indian women in their journey toward selfhood.
