Abstract:
The number of elderly people in India and throughout the world has been growing over time, and demographic change is putting pressure on the decline in social support and quality of life for the elderly. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between social support and quality of life among elderly people and how social support is related to the quality of life. The sample size of 209 participants (elderly persons aged 60 years and above) was selected through purposive sampling by including both urban and rural populations. A Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) was used to measure social support, and a 26-item WHOQOL-BREF was used to measure quality of life in four domains. The scores obtained on both the tools were correlated using the Pearson correlation method. The results revealed significant positive correlations of 0.57 between social support and quality of life and 0.61 the strongest positive relationship was found between social relationships and social support. These findings indicate that more the social relationships, the higher the social support and the higher the social support better the quality of life and with stronger social networks tend to experience better physical health, psychological well-being, environmental satisfaction, and overall quality of life.
