Abstract:
Toni Morrison’s works explore the deep, lasting psychological wounds of slavery on African-Americans. Morrison, through her narrative style, use of symbolism, portrayal of the characters, shows how the agony of slavery continues to haunt through generations. This research paper highlights Morrison’s portrayal of mental breakdown, multi-generational trauma, and a never-ending pain in her works, with a special reference to "Beloved," "Jazz," and "A Mercy." Morrison, through her novels, wants to show that the legal abolition of slavery failed to break the psychological chains of the formerly enslaved, and they were compelled to face an identity crisis.
