Abstract

Introduction: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a frequent neoplasia with an increasing incidence in the world and in Algeria and still has a poor prognosis. It is a complex disease that develops over many years involving several processes during carcinogenesis. The characterization of the molecular tumor status is considered today as an important phase in the management of these patients.

Objective: This article aims to study the biomarkers and their correlation with survival in patients with colorectal adenocarcinomas regardless of the treatments received.

Methods: The retrospective study included 80 patients with locally advanced or metastatic CRC collected in medical oncology over a 3-year period from January 2014 to December 2017.

Results: The univariate analysis retained among the factors studied a statistical significance for the KRAS and BRAF statuses and in multivariate analysis, only the KRAS status.

Discussion: The role of the pathologist during the analysis of surgical specimens or biopsies on primary tumors or CRC metastases is essential in different ways, both for the anatomopathological study and for molecular biology. Thus, the information provided can be of paramount importance, allowing the selection of the most appropriate treatment and predicting a therapeutic response. Some of them have a derogatory impact on survival, and this is what this article aims to demonstrate.

Conclusion: The identification of biomarkers is an important phase for therapists because it determines the choice of targeted therapies for patients with CRC. It thus makes it possible to ensure the maximum response in the first intention without deleterious effects and to offer better comfort and longer survival. A better knowledge of the biological processes of tumors remains necessary for the progression of biomarkers.
