Abstract
Yoni Abhyanga (vaginal lubrication or external application of medicated oils to the genital region) is a traditional Ayurvedic therapeutic procedure of significant clinical relevance in women’s health. As a specialised form of Abhyanga described in Stree Roga and Prasooti Tantra, it is a gentle yet effective modality for addressing various gynaecological disorders. This review explores the therapeutic benefits of Yoni Abhyanga from an Ayurvedic perspective, analysing its physiological impact on the pelvic region. The procedure facilitates the absorption of lipid-soluble active ingredients through the vaginal mucosa, potentially enhancing local circulation, modulating hormonal balance, and alleviating symptoms such as vaginal dryness, pelvic pain, and certain inflammatory conditions. Furthermore, the application of specific Siddha Tailas (medicated oils) offers local analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and Vata-pacifying effects, which are instrumental in restoring the structural and functional integrity of the reproductive system. This paper synthesises traditional textual references with contemporary clinical understanding to evaluate the efficacy of Yoni Abhyanga as a conservative management strategy. By improving local tissue health and reducing discomfort associated with various gynaecological ailments, Yoni Abhyanga represents a valuable, non-invasive therapeutic tool in modern Ayurvedic practice. Further longitudinal studies are warranted to standardise procedures and quantify the clinical outcomes of this practice in a broader patient population.
