Abstract

Financial planning and investment behaviour are important dimensions of long-term financial security, particularly for women who increasingly participate in paid employment and household financial decisions. This study examines the financial planning practices and investment behaviour of women teachers employed in higher education institutions in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. The study focuses on financial planning awareness, preferred investment avenues, risk orientation, and the socio-demographic factors associated with financial decision-making. Primary information was collected through a structured questionnaire using Likert-scale items, while secondary information was drawn from relevant academic studies and reports. The reported findings indicate that women teachers generally undertake basic financial activities such as budgeting and regular saving, but a smaller proportion maintain comprehensive long-term plans, particularly for retirement. The results also suggest a preference for comparatively conservative investment avenues. Fixed deposits and gold account for the largest share of the reported investment preference, whereas mutual funds and direct equity participation remain less common. Income, educational attainment, and work experience are identified in the study as factors associated with greater financial engagement and diversification. Limited practical knowledge, insufficient time to learn about financial products, concerns about market volatility, and inadequate access to dependable financial advice are reported as important constraints. The study therefore emphasizes the need for targeted financial education, accessible advisory support, and institutional initiatives that strengthen women's capacity to make informed long-term investment decisions.
