Abstract

Swami Vivekananda is regarded as one of the most influential educational thinkers and spiritual leaders of modern India. His philosophy of education emphasized the holistic development of individuals through character formation, self-confidence, moral values, and the realization of inner potential. According to Vivekananda, education is not merely the acquisition of information but the manifestation of the perfection already present within every individual. His educational ideas aimed at developing strong, self-reliant, and socially responsible citizens capable of contributing to national progress and human welfare.

The present study critically examines the relevance of Swami Vivekananda’s educational thoughts in contemporary society. The study is based on a qualitative and philosophical analysis of Vivekananda’s writings, speeches, and educational principles. It explores key aspects of his educational philosophy, including man-making education, character building, value education, practical learning, women’s education, and national development. The study further analyzes the applicability of these ideas in addressing present-day educational challenges such as moral decline, unemployment, excessive materialism, lack of self-confidence among youth, and the need for holistic development.

The findings indicate that Vivekananda’s educational philosophy remains highly relevant in the twenty-first century. His emphasis on value-based education, self-reliance, social service, and integrated personality development offers meaningful guidance for modern educational systems. The study concludes that the incorporation of Vivekananda’s educational ideals can contribute significantly to the development of responsible individuals and the creation of a morally strong and progressive society.
