Abstract

Over the past thirty years, women's collectives have emerged as influential socio-economic institutions across rural South Asia, with India witnessing a significant expansion of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) as a vehicle for women's development initiatives. Typically comprising 10 to 20 women from similar cultural and economic backgrounds residing in close proximity, SHGs operate through regular meetings where members contribute to a shared fund. This pooled capital serves as a financial resource, enabling access to credit and fostering mutual support. This study draws on data from 280 female SHG participants in Uttar Pradesh and employs statistical tools such as the McNemar Test and Z Test to evaluate outcomes. The analysis reveals a marked improvement in social responsiveness and awareness among members. Participation in SHGs has heightened women's consciousness of social dynamics, empowering them to address domestic concerns, voice grievances within their groups, and, when necessary, seek legal recourse. Economically, SHGs have contributed to poverty alleviation by enhancing access to financial resources and promoting self-reliance.
