Abstract
The rapid expansion of India's startup ecosystem has transformed the country's global entrepreneurial landscape, producing numerous unicorns across technology-intensive sectors. Among these, Byju's emerged as one of the most celebrated success stories in the educational technology (EdTech) industry by redefining the way millions of students accessed learning. Founded in 2011 by Byju Raveendran, the company leveraged digital technology, interactive pedagogy, artificial intelligence, and personalised learning to challenge the limitations of conventional classroom education. Supported by unprecedented venture capital funding and an aggressive acquisition strategy, Byju's expanded from a domestic educational platform into a global EdTech enterprise, achieving a peak valuation of nearly US$22 billion in 2022 (Economic Times, 2022).
However, the company's extraordinary growth was followed by an equally dramatic decline. Financial losses widened despite increasing revenues, governance concerns emerged due to delayed financial reporting, independent directors and auditors resigned, debt obligations intensified, investors questioned transparency, employees faced large-scale layoffs, and regulators-initiated investigations into several aspects of the company's operations. Within a remarkably short period, Byju's transformed from India's most valuable startup into one of its most debated corporate failures.
This case explores the complete entrepreneurial journey of Byju's—from its inception as an innovative educational venture to its emergence as a global EdTech leader, followed by its organisational decline. Rather than attributing the crisis to a single event, the case examines how entrepreneurial vision, technological innovation, venture capital financing, acquisition-led expansion, corporate governance, leadership decisions, financial management, and changing market conditions collectively shaped the company's trajectory. The case encourages students to critically analyse the challenges associated with scaling technology startups while maintaining financial discipline, organisational resilience, ethical governance, and stakeholder trust.
