Abstract

Garbhavakranti is a fundamental concept in Ayurveda describing the sequential process of conception, embryogenesis, and fetal development. Classical texts such as Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridaya elaborate on the formation of Garbha through the union of Shukra, Shonita, Atma, and Panchamahabhuta, under the influence of Kala and Prakriti. Garbhavakranti explains the month-wise development of the fetus, the role of Dosha, Dhatu, Agni, and Matruja–Pitruja–Atmaja Bhava. Modern embryology also describes a systematic process of fertilisation, implantation, organogenesis, and fetal growth. This review aims to critically analyse the concept of Garbhavakranti and correlate it with modern embryological principles, highlighting the scientific relevance of Ayurvedic embryology.
