Abstract:

Dozer push mining is a widely adopted surface mining technique employed in coal and mineral extraction where overburden or fragmented rock is transported over short distances using bulldozers instead of conventional loading and hauling equipment (Konya & Walter, 1990; Jimeno et al., 1995). The method offers operational simplicity, lower capital investment, and improved productivity in shallow deposits (Bhandari, 1997). However, blasting operations associated with dozer push mining generate environmental concerns such as ground vibration and flyrock, which may threaten worker safety, nearby infrastructure, and mine productivity (Siskind et al., 1980; Singh et al., 2016). This paper reviews the foundational principles of dozer push mining and evaluates an empirical field case study conducted at Mine X in central India to analyze the major factors influencing blast vibration, flyrock generation, and casting efficiency. Various engineering measures—including blast design optimization, electronic delay detonators, stemming improvement, charge distribution, initiation sequencing, and real-time vibration monitoring—are evaluated (Dowding, 1996; Roy, 2005). The study concludes that adaptive blast planning, tailored to site-specific lithological variations, significantly enhances operational safety while maximizing dozer productivity in surface mines.
