Abstract:

Temperature is one of the most important abiotic factors regulating the physiology, behaviour, reproduction, development, distribution, and survival of insects. As ectothermic organisms, insects rely heavily on environmental temperatures to regulate metabolic processes and life-history traits. Ongoing climate change and global warming have significantly altered temperature regimes, resulting in changes in insect phenology, reproductive success, mating behaviour, feeding activity, migration, diapause, and population dynamics. These changes have important ecological, agricultural, medical, and economic implications because insects perform essential ecological functions such as pollination, decomposition, biological control, and nutrient cycling while also acting as pests and disease vectors. The present study investigates the role of temperature in altering insect reproduction and behaviour through a comprehensive analytical review of recent scientific literature. The findings indicate that increasing temperatures accelerate insect development, modify reproductive performance, alter mating success, influence oviposition behaviour, and change seasonal activity patterns. The study further highlights the ecological consequences of temperature-induced behavioural changes and discusses adaptive mechanisms and future challenges under changing climatic conditions. The study concludes that understanding temperature-mediated responses is essential for biodiversity conservation, integrated pest management, agricultural sustainability, and predicting ecological responses to global climate change.
