Abstract:
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim to address global challenges such as poverty, inequality and environmental degradation by 2030. In Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), home to 1.49 million Scheduled Tribe members (11.9% of the population), achieving these goals requires addressing the unique socio-economic, cultural and environmental challenges faced by tribal communities like Gujjars, Bakerwals, Sippesis, Gaddis and others. This study examines the barriers to sustainable development goals implementation in Jammu and Kashmir tribal regions, including poverty, low literacy, health disparities and environmental threats, while highlighting prospects such as leveraging indigenous knowledge, promoting sustainable tourism and empowering women. Policy recommendations emphasise inclusive governance, education and sustainable livelihoods to ensure equitable development while preserving tribal identity.
