Abstract
The concept of Tridosha—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—is a foundational principle in Ayurveda, derived from the Panchamahabhutas (five great elements). These doshas regulate physiological functions and maintain homeostasis when in equilibrium. The aim of Ayurveda, as defined by the dual goals of Swasthasya Swastharakshanam (preservation of health) and Aturasya Vikara Prashamanam (treatment of disease), revolves around the regulation and balance of these doshas. Each dosha is characterized by specific Gunas (qualities), which play a crucial role in understanding their behavior, diagnosis of disorders, and therapeutic interventions. This paper explores the applied aspects of Gunas in Ayurvedic physiology, emphasizing their role in maintaining health through daily and seasonal regimens and in the management of imbalances. Despite being elaborately discussed in Ayurvedic classics, the study of Gunas about Sharirik (bodily) functions remains underexplored in contemporary research. The study also highlights the relevance of Panchabhautik theory and the Lok-Purusha Samya principle, asserting that Gunas are instrumental in determining the suitability of diet, treatment, and lifestyle. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of Gunas is indispensable for effective application of Ayurvedic principles in modern clinical practice.
