Abstract
Introduction: Verrucous carcinoma is a rare, well-differentiated, and non-metastatic variant of squamous cell carcinoma. This tumor is characterized by slow growth and marked local aggressiveness. The surgical approach is the treatment of choice, combined with close follow-up to detect early recurrences, which are frequent in this type of pathology.
Materials and Methods: We report a case of buccal verrucous carcinoma recorded at the central military hospital.
Results: The case involves a 59-year-old woman presenting with a vegetative mass located on the lateral border of the tongue, which had progressively increased in size over the course of a year, becoming very bothersome. A complete excision of the tumor was performed with clear margins. The pathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of verrucous carcinoma.
Discussion: The therapeutic strategy for verrucous carcinomas is difficult to specify because it mainly depends on the patient's age and general condition, as well as the clinical appearance and extent of the lesions. In the presented case, surgical excision led to a cure with no recurrence after two years of follow-up.
Conclusion: This case highlights the particular clinico-pathological characteristics of this malignant tumor and discusses the indication and relevance of the conservative treatment approach.
