Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder strongly influenced by dietary habits, physical inactivity, excess body weight and other lifestyle factors. Ayurveda describes Prameha as a disorder associated with improper dietary and behavioural patterns, particularly excessive intake of Kapha-promoting and Meda-increasing factors, sedentary habits and impaired metabolic function. The present empirical study was undertaken to assess the effect of Ayurvedic management consisting of selected herbal-mineral formulations along with Pathya-Apathya dietary advice on glycemic control over the 12-week intervention period in patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Patients fulfilling the predefined diagnostic and eligibility criteria were assessed clinically and biochemically. The principal outcome measure was change in glycated haemoglobin, while fasting blood glucose, postprandial blood glucose, body weight and selected clinical features of Prameha were considered secondary outcomes. The intervention was given according to the patient's clinical presentation, Dosha-Dushya involvement, Agni status, body constitution, dietary pattern and associated metabolic features. Dietary advice emphasized appropriate quantity and quality of food, avoidance of excessive sweet, heavy and highly processed foods, regulation of meal timing and incorporation of suitable physical activity. Treatment response was assessed by comparing baseline and post-intervention observations over the predefined study period. The illustrated findings are presented for educational purposes to demonstrate how an Ayurvedic approach may be evaluated using clinical and biochemical outcome measures.
